Dilemma ... Erika from The Virgin Renovators posted this question with regards to her quest room's reach in bifold closet ...
"So, here’s the big question from renovation headquarters:
what would you do? Sliding doors? Or remove them?
And if you were to remove them, would you frame it out somehow? Or paint the inside a different color/ different shade than the rest of the room? Frame it out with birch branches? Line the inside with bamboo strips? The field is wide open! I’d love to hear your creative ideas!"
my suggestions
personally, i don't like my personal belongings showing. doors on closets is a must for me unless it's behind a wall or a walk in, however i know many people who have completely open closets and they love it! i applaud their bravery... :) and i must admit, when done right, open closets look great! keep in mind however...
1) Lighting - everything always comes back to lighting. because the inside of a closet will be darker than the rest of the room, having lighting or a lighter shade of paint color inside the closet will bring the closet to life. if you're leaving your closet open for full view, you're naturally drawing attention to it so why now light it up! make it a focal point.
2) Frame it - a simple frame around the closet opening will really bring it out. tying the frame with the molding is a great idea in keeping things uniform.
3) Details - when you're putting something on display, you have to be very detail oriented. the rails you use to hang your clothes, the drawers you use, the wood, the finish, the small details in the knobs etc... detail detail detail is key in making it look clean, fresh, and modern!
and if you don't want to keep your closet open all the time, a simple solution is to add drapes from the inside of the closet to close it off if need be. curtains are great room dividers or mess hiders if you need something quick, cost effective and smart!

i love it and i know many of you do to, on once beloved chairs that is!
nothing brings to life a great framed louis iv's chair than a new coat of paint and a stunning piece of fabric. i just love taking old abandoned chairs and making them look new again, or old chairs look old still but great!
Erika from The Virgin Renovators brought up a really good delema question on her blog this morning and i thought i would blog on it here as well since i've been getting this question a lot lately.
color
is it smart to do a whole room in one bold color?
Erika's choice of color was yellow, one of my favorite colors, but her delema was "do i paint the entire guest room yellow? or use yellow as an accent color?"

when painting you need to take a few things into consideration,
1. lighting - you want to make sure the color you want looks like the color you want in your space. depending on your lighting - the amount of natural light in the space during the day & at night, select a few of your favorite shades and test it out in the room for 24 hours. make sure the color you want looks like the color you want inside the space because if you don't test it out first, you might be in for a rude surpise!
2. accents - once you've selected your color of choice, you need to make sure you have complimenting colors or shades to balance that stark bold walls. soft textures of white and light shades and patterns can take away from the starkness of bold colors, however if it's not done right, it can add to the chaos so make sure you do your homework first!
3. the purpose of the room - if this is a fun kids room where you want the kids to feel energized and happy everytime they enter then by all means, have your fun with the colors and go crazy but if this is a guest room or a bedroom where sanctuary and rest is the main purpose, becareful with the color choice. people don't realize this but color does have a huge effect on a person's mood and emotion. the wrong color on the wrong day can really start to mess with you!

i just fell in love with this space!

in an otherwise neurtral space, you'll find dramatic splashes of hot pink to introduce personality and drama. are these chairs fantastic or what?!
this year started with a BANG!
i've been so busy trying to get myself in order for the projects at hand that i decided to look for a partner this year. usually i don't take on more than a project at at time since i usually work alone and have so many other projects running on the side but this year i had a few requests i couldn't pass up. i thought if i could meet someone who's in the same boat as i am and willing to join forces to create a great little company, how amazing would that be!
ideally i would like to find someone who has design experience and a list of their own clientele already in place so i placed an add last week and had some amazing responses. i'm meeting with a few people this week and next to get a better understanding of where everyone's coming from and to also introduce myself and my ideas. any suggestions???
planning this whole thing, i was brought back to my experiences working part time during school at a bridal boutique in yorkville. one thing i loved about going to work was the atmosphere. the boutique was beautiful, full of glamourous accessories and furnished like you wouldn't believe. i always thought to myself, when i start my own studio i want to design it like a bridal boutique :)
